One of the most influential figures of the 20th Century, Mao Zedong, was the founder of the PRC and governed China with “dictatorial” powers until he died in 1976.
Post Mao’s death, several political reforms were carried out in China. The process of decentralisation of power ensued as “one man” rule was abolished, and the power of the Chinese Communist Party, along with various other institutions, was restored.
Nevertheless, in a historic decision, the Chinese constitution was amended in 2018 to annul the two-term Presidency limit, which was introduced post the death of Chairman Mao. Thus, opening the door for Xi Jinping to “rule” for life.
